Bringing the joy of birthday parties to homeless children is the mission of Birthday Wishes, the Chamber’s chosen charity for 2018-2019. Based in Hicksville, the grass roots group founded in 2008 brings a complete party to over 60 homeless shelters and transitional living facilities
across Long Island. In addition to party activities, birthday cake and presents, they “deliver joy, hope and positive lasting memories to children and their families.” Last year they brought parties to 6,000 children on Long Island.
Birthday Wishes Long Island Director Jamie Rapfogel introduced the charity to members and guests at the September Membership Meeting. She noted that there are shelters with children in need in our own backyard – two 100 family hotels in the immediate area. “The day you were born is special, most of us are fortunate to remember wonderful celebrations with friends and family. When we are able to create this type of experience for homeless children, it is powerful and memorable for everyone involved,” she said.
Chamber president Andrew Lamkin: “Please join me in supporting this wonderful organization as we bring awareness and raise funds at our various events through next summer. We have set a goal of $5,000 to help them put a smile on the faces of children.” Andrew also thanked the charity committee, led by board member Lindsay Covello, for their efforts involving solicitation, carefully reviewing applications and interviewing candidates.
