cnEach year, an estimated 432,000 Long Island residents suffer from some form of mental health disorder. But many suffer in silence—because most can’t ask for help, especially those who need help the most. That’s why it is so important for friends, families, and neighbors to be the voice of those who can’t or won’t seek help for themselves.

Understand the Issues--Some of the key problems:

Approximately 334,190 individuals face chemical dependencies on Long Island (more than 13% of our local population) annually and approximately 11,270 Long Island residents face serious mental illness . Many thousands more face other mental health disorders that interfere with functioning or quality of life.

Many Long Island residents with mental health and/or substance use disorders are dying young.

People with serious mental illness—SMI—die 25 years earlier than the general population, on average (Morbidity and Mortality in People with Serious Mental Illness, NASMHPD, 2006).

Mental health disorders and substance use disorders often occur together within individuals in a correlated way (“co-occurring diagnoses”)

Funding to organizations (like CN Guidance) that provide services to individuals facing these conditions is becoming less stable during a time when our community and its residents most need support.

CN Guidance brings together many key components to address these problems:

Providing education and outreach to the community and to individuals about the nature and magnitude of these related problems – and about services that are available to help individuals and families, including core services of CN Guidance.

Offering a model of integrated services that treat each individual holistically. This means not treating symptoms or health problems in “silos” and instead addressing the inter-relationship present among a person’s: (1) mental health disorders; (2) substance use disorders; (3) medical health disorders; and (4) psychological, sociological, and economic needs.

Using cross-disciplinary teams and partnerships between organizations to provide the needed expertise to render services to clients holistically.

Reaching out to the community for support (time, money, expertise).

Central Nassau Guidance and Counseling Services is a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit organization.
