February 2017 President’s Message

Feb 1, 2017

Membership Dinner Is Rescheduled for March 2nd!

February is filled with lots of tradition, celebration and holidays! We have Ground Hog’s Day on February 2nd, Super Bowl Sunday, Valentine’s Day, Presidents’ Day and February 28th is National Public Sleeping Day! Internationally, on February 29th (only comes around once every 4 years) Ireland celebrates Bachelor’s Day – a traditional holiday when women propose to men. Lots of other notable events have taken place in February: A 100-pound woman ate 26 grilled cheese sandwiches in 10 minutes at a New York restaurant to win the World Grilled Cheese Eating Championship; the New York Giants upset the New England Patriots’ near-perfect season to clinch the Super Bowl; and the Chamber has it’s Annual Paid-Up Membership Dinner on February 9th! (Mother Nature had other plans for us! Now rescheduled for Thursday, March 2nd. We hope you can join us. If you registered for the February date and are unable to come in March, please email barbmars@optonline.net to cancel.) February is a great month that heralds the coming of Spring. It’s a time to energize & renew for the coming months!

Special Thanks to Janine Friedman of Choice Training & Coaching Solutions for leading a workshop on Leadership and Donna Bloom of Wise Mind Hypnosis for providing a hypnotic program on Stress. Both sessions were well attended and provided insights and tips about these important topics for business owners. Thank you to the Bruce Grossman & the CAP Center for hosting a Networking Nite on February 1st, which included a preview of their new production, Side Show. Kudos to POB Cares for hosting the January Networking Event at the Y. It was very moving to hear about their work and the impact on the community. I’m very proud that our Chamber has “adopted” POB Cares. Our members continue to show enthusiastic support for it and the great work they do! Money raised via the Chamber’s 50-50 raffles & other raffles all go to support POB Cares.

At our January meeting Jordan Schechter impressed us with her presentation about her Varsity Cheerleading Team and their journey to the National Finals. Jordan demonstrates all of the qualities we look for in young people and our future leaders: passion, devotion and excellence. As we all know, these are the key ingredients to our success. Speaking about the future, many new, exciting and important events are taking place next door in Hicksville. Their Chamber president, Lionel Chitty, offered a preview of the future, describing the efforts to revitalize Hicksville and make it a “destination location.” Hicksville’s development will be important to our business community by virtue of our proximity. We will need to take an interest in events there and participate in its future. Beechwood has begun pre-construction sales at Country Pointe. The response to the project has been very strong, which is a testament to the vitality of our community. As it progresses, Country Pointe will offer our members many opportunities to offer our services and products to the 600+ families that will be making Plainview their home.

Mark your calendar and be sure to attend the Chamber’s meeting on February 15th which will feature returning guest Jeff Goldberg who will offer an interactive program on the holy grail of business topics: Sales.

Want to get more involved? Our Fair Committee, under the direction of Fred Morante, will be meeting for the first time this year on February 24th at the Y at 8 am. Come on down and check it out.  Our Membership Committee is expanding and we could use your ideas and energy! Speak with Marianne Plummer about being a part of this Committee.

Our Chamber continues to grow, attracting new members each month who recognize the benefits of membership. State Assemblyman Chuck Lavine has said that our Chamber is, “One of the strongest on Long Island.” We’re strong and are growing because of you—our members who are passionate, devoted and strive for excellence.

Join or RENEW your membership. Come down to meeting and events. Get involved. While February might be the month that honors National Public Sleeping Day, let’s celebrate our businesses, get energized and ready for the Spring!

RENEW & RSVP!

Looking forward to seeing you all soon!
